MIST, the Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation, is a citizen-based non-profit organization based in Missoula, Montana. We work to create a sustainable transportation system in Missoula, that can be an example for other similar communities. We have goals for safety, equity and environmental soundness. Four programs work towards these goals.
Our day to day work is based mainly 2-fold: research design and advocacy for a transportation infrastructure that is conducive to walking, bicycling, transit and motor vehicle; and contributing and furthering positive conversation about what it means to have a sustainable transportation system within the broader context of a sustainable community.
To guide our day to day work, we have crafted a community vision:
Imagine: Active walking and cycling cultures; extensive transit systems that run on renewable energy; bicycle station and car share options; safe and flowing vehicle movement; networks of greenway corridors that connect people and open space; an awareness and understanding of transportation issues and impacts.
MIST includes the Free Cycles Community Bicycle Program
