The Time is Right for 2010 Planning

Ever wonder how road projects are decided on and put into action?  While big planning documents are certainly important, a lot of the time it is the fall and winter before the next construction season that key decisions are made regarding what a road is going to look like.

Several projects in Missoula are gaining traction for the 2010 building season- summer- and now is the time to make your voice heard and desires known.  A list of projects that the City and State are planning:

Adding bike lanes on Brooks Street from Mount to Higgins

Changing Higgins from Broadway to Railroad from 4 lanes to 3 lanes, while adding cycle tracks

Rebuilding the Arthur 5th 6th area near campus

Implementing the Rattlesnake Gateway at Madison/Greenough/Spruce/N.2nd

Reworking the transportation modeling software to include projections and data for walking, bicycling and transit

Updating the local Non-Motorized Transportation Plan

Adding a second left turn lane at Mullan/Reserve Intersection

MIST generally supports all of the above projects except one (adding a lane to Mullan and Reserve, which would remove a bike lane and pedestrian island).  And we will continue to look for ways to either make a roundabout work at Arthur/5th or- if a signal is built- slow and smooth the speeds.  Other details for the above project list will be finalized over the winter.  If you have some extra time this winter, consider getting involved in sustainable transportation projects in the Missoula Valley.  It's similar to choosing seeds for next year's garden bounty.
