Planting Seeds for 2020
December, 2019:  This has been a good year for sustainable transportation in Missoula, Montana. The biggest change was finally getting wide, buffered bike lanes on both S. 5th and S. 6th Street, from Higgins to Russell. This project generally helps car flow, pedestrian crossings and bike flow. From 2007 to 2014 there were 277 car crashes on these sections of streets. Most people agreed something needed to be done. The resulting project was worked on primarily by MIST and the surrounding neighborhood councils. This one street project will help be a catalyst for more change: we are now focusing on the Hip Strip, the Higgins Bridge and the downtown area for better walking and biking. When we say 'better' we generally mean safer and more accessible. For far too long the transportation industry has focused on moving more cars at higher speeds. This trend is changing to include walking, biking and transit and we are happy to be a part of the process.
