The May 13th edition of Status Report, the newsletter of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, has a 2-page article about pedestrian/motor vehicle crashes and vehicle speeds. As they say... "about 5 percent of pedestrians hit by a vehicle traveling 20mph will die. The fatality rate jumps to 40 percent for cars traveling 30mph, 80 percent for cars going 40mph, and 100 percent for cars going 50mph or faster." They quote a "Literature review on vehicle travel speeds and pedestrian injuries," written by Bill Leaf et al for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
