Fall 2013 News

The Free Cycles community bike shop is as organized and well-running as it has ever been.  Some of our attention is focused on doing the same with the Pedal Power Warehouse next door.  The Tweed Ride on 10/20 was a great success with 140 riders and 3k raised for our Youth programs.  The 'Bicycle Blast' party on 11/1 was a fun, community-building time, with Louis' art show and then Gil and the Spills rocking the (bike) house.  We're planning another party on 12/6, so stay tuned.

On the MIST front, we're excited with the recent opening of Missoula's first urban mini roundabout at the Scott Toole intersection.  It seems to be working well.  A psyllium pad was placed under 1,000 sq ft. of bike parking at the Osprey Stadium, and it set up great.  This can be an example for sustainable paving.  New bike lanes finally came to Russell, from 3rd to Mount.  Several sidewalks have been built as well as a trail connection or two.  Regarding public meetings, mark 11/20 for the full Russell Street design session.  A coalition is pushing hard for 10' travel lanes (not 12') and buffered bike lanes or cycle tracks, as well as making the cooridor very bike and ped friendly overall.

Looking ahead, there is still desing work to be done on the Van Buren roundabouts coming, implementing the Active Trans plan and continuing the seed work for Missoula Bike Share and a Neighborhood Greenways network.  Let us know if you have time to be involved, or would like our monthly e-news letter.  Thanks, -Bob Giordano, MIST, Free Cycles  ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
